Many people in Ireland were unaware they had a PPI policy included on their loan or credit card and this was often due to the fact they had been mis-sold the product. PPI was devised as a product to assist those who became sick or unemployed and were therefore unable to make payments.

There were a number of flaws to PPI, notably the fact that the sales staff regularly failed to ask relevant questions about the consumer which would determine if they were eligible for PPI. In some instances, PPI was even attached without the persons consent or the consumer felt under pressure to include the policy in their loan terms. These are all examples of how PPI was mis-sold and more often than not, the banks made more profit from the sale of PPI on a loan rather than the loan itself.
